What Is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cells are the body’s foundational cells — capable of developing into the specialized cell types needed to support healing in bone, cartilage, tendon, and disc tissue. In regenerative orthopedic treatment, physicians introduce stem cells near a site of injury or degeneration, such as a joint, tendon, or intervertebral disc, to support the body’s own repair process.

At our Coral Gables clinic, stem cell therapy is offered as part of a broader regenerative medicine program that also includes PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy and other minimally invasive orthopedic treatments, for patients with conditions such as disc degeneration, osteoarthritis, tendon injury, and chronic joint pain.

Note: Most stem cell–based orthopedic therapies, other than certain cord blood–derived treatments, have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. See the Florida-required patient notice below.

  3. Image-Guided Procedure — Stem cells are administered to the targeted site using image guidance in an outpatient setting.
  4. Follow-Up Care — Our team monitors your response and coordinates any additional therapy as part of your plan.

Florida Law & Patient Rights

Required Patient Notice

Florida’s Stem Cell Therapy Act (CS/CS/HB 1617, enacted as CS/CS/SB 1768, Ch. 2025-185, Laws of Florida, effective July 1, 2025) authorizes physicians to perform certain non-FDA-approved stem cell therapies for orthopedics, wound care, and pain management, and requires the following disclosure:

THIS NOTICE MUST BE PROVIDED TO YOU UNDER FLORIDA LAW. This physician performs one or more stem cell therapies that have not yet been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. You are encouraged to consult with your primary care provider before undergoing any stem cell therapy.”

Fla. Stat. § 458.3245 (allopathic physicians) / § 459.0127 (osteopathic physicians), as enacted by Ch. 2025-185, Laws of Florida.

Before Treatment: Required Informed Consent

Before treatment, patients will be asked to provide written informed consent covering:

  • The nature and character of the proposed treatment, including whether it is FDA-approved
  • The anticipated results of the proposed treatment
  • Recognized alternative forms of treatment, including non-treatment
  • Recognized serious risks, complications, and anticipated benefits of the treatment and its alternatives
  • Your option to consult with your primary care provider before undergoing stem cell therapy

  • Stem Cell Source — Only afterbirth placental perinatal stem cells or compliant human cells/tissue products (HCT/Ps)
  • Facility Standards — Sourced from FDA-registered facilities certified by recognized accrediting organizations
