Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative Medicine can refer to many different types of procedures.  BMAC-Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (contains Stem Cells), A2M-Alpha 2 Macroglobulin (a binding protein), PRP-Platelet Rich Plasma (growth factor concentrate), Orthokine (interleukin antagonist), SVF-Stromal Vascular Fraction (Stem Cells from Fat) are different kinds of biologics that are autologous (tissue taken from a human and given back to the same human).  Other biologic products fall into a category of Allograft (taken from one human and implanted into a different human). Currently there are a limited number of types of Allograft products available. Umbilical Cord Blood Allograft, Cadaveric Allograft, Wharton’s Jelly, and Amniotic Tissue Allograft, are currently available for purchase. These Allograft products usually contain some growth factors and may or may not have live Stem Cells in them.  The FDA has guidelines for Allograft Tissues and what claims can be made regarding contents. The companies isolating these Allograft products will sometimes be compliant with these guidelines, but others are not compliant and make claims about viable cell counts and growth factor concentration.

Randomized clinical trials are in process testing Expanded Allograft Stem Cell and Progenitor Cell Products, but there are no products currently available on the market.

Once in the  body, the injected stem cells or biologic can help stimulate healing and decrease chronic inflammatory reaction.

Your stem cell injection is administered using real-time imaging such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy. The imaging allows your doctor at Source Healthcare to see the targeted tissues and guide the needle to the precisely right area before injecting the stem cells.

Where do the stem cells for my therapy come from?

Stem cells are extracted from your own body, either from bone marrow or adipose tissue  (fat tissue). Once the samples are removed, they’re carefully processed to concentrate cells from the other components in the sample.

Adipose tissue and bone marrow are rich sources of adult stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells are being studied for use in the treatment of many musculoskeletal problems

What health conditions can be treated with regenerative medicine interventions?

Acute or Chronic spine and joint injuries may be candidates for regenerative medicine interventions.  Some tissues in the body have poor blood flow and when injured can evolve into a painful chronic inflammatory condition.  Joints, Ligaments, Tendons, and Spinal Discs are some of the types of tissues that are prone to developing chronic inflammation after injury.  Regenerative medicine interventions with Stem Cells are thought to stimulate a healing response by amplifying the body’s natural healing mechanism at the injured area.

An injection of concentrated stem cells or other biologic substance can give your body a boost, accelerating the healing process and reducing inflammation so you’re free from pain sooner.

These are a few examples of the conditions often treated with stem cell therapy at Source Healthcare:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Meniscus tears
  • Tennis or Golfers Elbow
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Bursitis

The team at Source Healthcare often use regenerative medicine treatments for many other  conditions responsible for back, knee, hip, neck, leg, arm, and joint pain.

What should I know about clinical trials for stem cells?

As leading experts in stem cell therapy, the doctors at Source Healthcare conduct clinical research trials approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They test the safety and effectiveness of new cellular and other biologic treatments for health conditions like low back pain and knee pain.
